The Lasagna experiment: An Update

A quick update about my Lasagna fiasco - I finished off the rest of it for lunch today.

It was delicious.

So good, I forgot to take a photo of it.

Sorry.

The Lasagna experiment

A number of months ago, a friend of mine pointed pointed me in the direction of A Year of Slow Cooking, which details the efforts of cooking with a crock pot for an entire year.

The blog covers a wide range of meals. So far, my favorite is this simple Slow cooked Shredded Chicken recipe. There’s almost no work to it, and the results are very tasty. And useful. I had chicken for a week+ after I finished.

The second recipe I tried for a small dinner party Friday evening, was Super Easy CrockPot Lasagna.

The instructions are simple, the ingredients delicious. I prepped everything the night before - I found some great Central Market pasta sauce, I snuck in some broccoli and carrots. Mmm. It was going to be good. In the morning I added the requisite water, set the cooker on ‘low’ and went to work.

My mouth was watering in anticipation as I drove home. Oh, it was going to be delicious. As I entered the house, however, there was a subtle undertone of… something suspicious.

Yep. It burned. Badly. As failures go, this one was spectacular. I don’t have any photos (the camera refused to work while pointed at the mess), but you can ask the dinner guests… they can all attest to how bad it was. My suspicion is that the noodles I used required more water than her recipe, and that I somewhat under-estimated how long a work day is, and therefor cooked things longer than I intended.

Time for plan B: I grabbed keys, shoes and ran out the door for the grocery store. 20 minutes later, and I’m improvising cooking instructions, boiling water for the noodles and prepping another batch of lasagna. It’s all about the dinner, right?

It was chaos. It was a rush. But in the end, I had the lasagna in the oven with just enough time to spare for cleaning up the kitchen and picking up the dining and living rooms.

The dinner was great - there was both red and white wines, Kelly brought Dulce de Leche for dessert, also made in a slow cooker. It was a regular crock pot party. (Just, with my lasagna made in the oven - you know, the failure and all…)

I’ll probably try the recipe again, just do it while I’m actually at home and can keep an eye on things.

Updates

I realise it has been entirely too long since I’ve written anything of interest on this blog… For a while, I was posting every 4 weeks or so, but it has been in excess of 2 months since my last post….

This is because I’m the king of starting blog entries on thoughts, and not finishing them. I kid you not, I have at least 10 blog entries in various stages of completion - all but the “finished” stage.

This is not a new years resolution, but more a challenge to myself to be a more active writer. It is an outlet for thoughts that I enjoy, but not one that I use enough.

Feel free to start hassling me if I go too long without writing….

Quiet Time?

I’ll warn you up front - this entry seems to be a conglomerate of various thoughts, with no specific guidance, other than a common topic.

Part 1:
The other day over a few beers, the discussion centered around “quiet time” - sort of an umbrella phrase that seems to cover any sort of solitary communion (intimate fellowship or rapport) with God, whether it be prayer, reading scripture, worship or just quiet meditation on His word.

It seemed that for most, living out this concept was hard work. A discipline.

The point was also made, though, that it seems a lot easier for girls to have “quiet time” - I often hear girls talk about their daily/morning devotions, prayer time, et cetera.

To the girls: Is it really easier for y’all? If it is, then what do you think is the reason why? If it’s just as hard for y’all as it is for us… I guess I don’t have anything more to ask. But I’ll feel better knowing I’m not the only one struggling with this. :)

Part 2:
I pray at various times throughout the day, not by any pre-determined schedule, just as I’m feeling led to do so. I also often worship (typically singing, bad as it may be) - again, not by any set schedule, although a lot of this seems to happen as I’m driving around, be it in my truck or on my motorcycle.

While this isn’t necessarily quiet, and I might also be focusing on things like driving - does this qualify as intimate fellowship with God? Does it qualify as “quiet time”? The Hebrew worship of God, prayer and bible reading was FAR from a quiet affair, sometimes involving loud shouting.

Did we fall victim to the “God in a box” syndrom in our definition of terms or acts or whatever you want to call it…. ?

Emotional Baggage

The introduction of my grandfather’s book starts with this:

It is the first two decades of a man’s life that shape him. What he learns during this time of love and hate, justice and injustice, right and wrong — stays with him a lifetime.

I knew that this was true, but never really experienced it. While I grew up in a strict family, I was never abused or beaten while I grew up — sure, I was disciplined at times, but nothing beyond that.

However, I was made fun of relentlessly when I was younger, for various reasons — being gullible, being relatively nice to people in general, and most of all… probably just having one of those easily-teased personalities.

So imagine my surprise when I came to the realization that this harassment from 20+ years ago cost me my recent relationship of 5 years.

Oh, yes — I’m diggin’ the irony here. Mr. I-never-had-any-baggage taken captive by his own baggage.

I’ve started meeting with a <strike>shrink</strike>therapist, so we’ll see how that goes.

How’s that for some unexpected insight?

:)

Hurricane Ike and chance of rain...

This is what we did at work thursday:

Indicate on this page how many inches of rain
you think we'll get, and how many GW's you put
on your guess.

(We'll audit the edit history -
no last-minute changes saturday through monday)

    * 3.00" - D***** - $1
    * 0.5" - M***** - $1
    * 2.78" - M***** - $1
    * 0.00" - R***** - $1,000,000 (real money)
    * 1.5" - C***** - $1
    * 1.6" - C***** - 1 latte (true currency)
    * 1.4" - C***** - $1
    * 3.5" - B***** - $1
    * 0.75" @ ABIA - S***** - $1
    * Trace - R***** - $1

On the flip side, the last 3 days have been spent coming up with disaster scenarios and how to keep hospital systems running despite any disasters…

I figured we needed a break for some silliness.
