Hurricane Ike and chance of rain...

This is what we did at work thursday:

Indicate on this page how many inches of rain
you think we'll get, and how many GW's you put
on your guess.

(We'll audit the edit history -
no last-minute changes saturday through monday)

    * 3.00" - D***** - $1
    * 0.5" - M***** - $1
    * 2.78" - M***** - $1
    * 0.00" - R***** - $1,000,000 (real money)
    * 1.5" - C***** - $1
    * 1.6" - C***** - 1 latte (true currency)
    * 1.4" - C***** - $1
    * 3.5" - B***** - $1
    * 0.75" @ ABIA - S***** - $1
    * Trace - R***** - $1

On the flip side, the last 3 days have been spent coming up with disaster scenarios and how to keep hospital systems running despite any disasters…

I figured we needed a break for some silliness.

Late night photo shoot

“You know it’s a good photo shoot when the cops show up…”

Those were the fabled words after Saturday evening’s mini-shoot with Heather and Jordan. Turns out that 3 people standing around with umbrellas and stuff look suspicious enough to warrant the cops stop by to check it out.

Actually, someone called 911, the cops showed, and I had a conversation with a very nice public servant.

We were doing nothing wrong, not trespassing, and when I asked if we needed to leave, he sort-of shrugged his shoulders and indicated that he did not care.

All in a days work, I say.

Complete Transparency

I have often wondered what it would be like, to live life in complete transparency.

Hiding not one thought, not one idea, not one of the deep, dark secrets that we all have hidden away, deep down in our subconscious. Sharing them, free to float on the wind like small gray pigeons - beautiful as they fly, but each individually full of dirt and filth?

Would the world be a better place if they knew that I sometimes think mean things, really mean things, without even meaning to?

Would the world be a better place if they saw the sadness, depression and the incredible depths of pain and despair that sometimes wrack this mind?

In relationships people always talk about how it’s important to communicate - Would the world be a better place if it heard every single thought, doubt and indecision that gets filed away, each in their very own dark place?

Would the world be a better place with all the introspection, the self-doubt, the concerns and the worries?

Sure, there are the positives.

There is the love, the smiles, the warm memories… But those are often shared, especially during this high season of loving and sharing with others. We live our lives sharing all the warm fuzzyness, and shying away from revealing both sides of the coin.

Sometimes it’s for fear of rejection, sometimes it’s for fear of hurting others, sometimes it’s your own selfish pride that gets in the way.

So tell me this, dear readers…

Would you like to spend a week in my mind?

I don’t. :)

4:45

Sometimes I wonder what is going on.

Right now is one of those moments - it’s 4:45am, and I’m still awake, sitting around wondering what’s going on.

I monkeyed around with making another video, then I read in my Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card.

Then I got hungry and crawled out of bed.

Now I’m just hungry. And tired of being up all night.

My alarm will go off in 30 minutes.

I’m considering getting breakfast. Nothing like a 5am run to Kerby Lane to make things new and interesting, neh?

Neh - a phrase I just stole from the book… A sort of “Don’t cha think” combined with “No” Or just neh, similar to hehn.

Anyway, it’s now 4:48, and I should get dressed for breakfast.

Astroglide and Ex-lax

Earlier this evening, a friend of mine was on his way from his car to the restaurant. Approaching a couple who had been talking near their car, he noticed they went quiet as he approached.

Then, as he passed no more than 5 feet from the couple, he heard the gentleman utter the solidary phrase

“Well, I’ve got astroglide and Ex-Lax”

This is one of those moments where you really do NOT want to know what is going on - or pretty much anything related to the situation. Let imagination lie (dormant, preferably) - and just keep on walking….

This moment in time just might be overshadowed the moment later - when, after a lengthy discussion of Nugget’s mother talking his cousin into moving down to Austin so she could meet dB - when Moonwick silently asked where Nugget’s stepfather fit in this new picture.

For those who need a few seconds to contemplate the connection between this, pause for a few seconds.

Ah, yes… done thinking? Well, in case you did not make the connection - the confusion arises regarding the distinction between Nugget’s mother, and Nugget’s cousin. They are, you see, not the same.

This, however, summarily escaped Moonwick at the time.

The rest of the evening went over well - I am struggling with the recent change from summer time to winter time (it is presently 2247, bedtime was 47 minutes ago) - but hopefully getting up in the morning will be not too difficult afterall.

Happy Birfday, Nugget.

Heard at unknown location W -

A: Do you have the admin login?

M: No, even I haven’t been given the keys to the kingdom yet….

Me: Oh, have to wait for O to give them to you?

M: Yeah, he’s the king of the hill.

Me: We see who’s wearing the pants in this relationship.

M: I wear the butt-less chaps.

Free hugs

Juan Mann had just come back to Sydney from London after his world turned upside down, and he had to go home. All he had left, was a carry on bag full of clothes, and a world full of trouble.

Standing in the airport watching other passengers meeting their family and loved ones, he felt alone. Alone in a world of people happy to see their loved ones.

He made a cardboard sign with “Free Hugs” on it, found a busy intersection, and stood there, holding the sign aloft.

But for a long time he was ignored, until a little old lady shared some of her grief, and received a hug in return.

And so starts the story of the ‘Free Hugs’ Campaign.

Feel free to click through and read more about it - it’s a story about loving others, being loved, and bringing a smile on people’s faces.

It is well known among my friend circle that I enjoy giving people hugs - so this idea strikes home with me.

I recently bought a shirt with large-letter “Free Hugs” on the front and back, which I’ll be wearing as much as I can - trying to live in the spirit, without needing to carry a sign with me everywhere. :)

So go out and give your friends a hug!

Oklahoma Suks

Yes, I know it’s misspelled - and no, I don’t care.

Every year, Independence Brewing Co. makes a special beer - Oklahoma Suks Beer. The idea came about last year, when the owner found out an Oklahoma brewery was making a Texas Sucks beer.

(More of the story here.)

I’m yet to find out where to buy any of this beer, but if I find out, I’ll let y’all know.
