How should christians behave?

A recent disaster that swept through southern and central Texas got me to think more about something that’s been on my heart for a while.

Typically, when there is a disaster or some sort of situation, there is never a lack of people to volunteer with helping out. Whether this means caring for people, searching for people, delivering food or blankets, doesn’t matter.

Among non-christians, there is often the perception that we only do these things for the purpose of pushing our beliefs (or, in some cases, religion).

While there are christians out there who have this m.o, I’d like to think that for most of us, it’s about helping, caring and loving people, and not about “the numbers.”

So I think it’s important to evaluate our heart and our intentions as we get involved with helping and caring for people - the act of helping, caring and loving them should be in the forefront of your mind, not the feeling of obligation that you have to share the gospel or your faith with the people you are helping.

Remember, it’s about loving people, not converting them.

The Angel

Today, I saw an angel.

I was in the middle of nowhere, sitting on a bench outside some no-name gas station.

The car: Nondescript, with an uneven wear pattern to the left front tire. Probably out of alignment.

The girl: Young, stumbling on insecure feet, her face disfigured by some strange birth defect.

The Angel: The mother. The love she feels for her daughter is tangible - you see it in her smile, you see it in her eyes. She has one of the most gorgeous faces I have ever seen.

As she helped her daughter into the car, she signed to the girl, before walking around the car to the driver side.

“I’ll be right there, stay.”

The moment between mother and daughter was so precious - it just made me smile.

And as I smiled, our eyes met. My eyes were opened, and I could see.

There is a story there to be told - a missing father? An abusive husband? Who knows. But in the brief moment that our eyes met, I could sense there was something.

What is that something? We may never know. But what I do know, is that in the middle of nowhere… there is an angel, taking care of the most precious little girl in the world.
