Retreating to Art

Early last spring my friend Kevin told me to set aside a weekend in October for this big artist retreat that happens in the hill country.

A few weekends ago was that weekend, I went – and it was great to have a weekend to decompress, and to focus on the artist in me. It was truly refreshing, being in the middle of nowhere – with no pressure, no rush, hugely supporting friends (even if we just met hours ago), and an all-around atmosphere of art, and creativity.

I think I will have further words on the retreat as I process through it, but for now I leave you with the photographic evidence of the weekend….

The Wall Project @ SXSW

This year during SXSW, Hope Chapel and Christ Church held an art outreach event off 6th street downtown, called “The Wall Project at SXSW.”

The Wall

As I heard about the project, it combined two of my big passions – the creation of art and reaching the city for Christ. So I signed up to volunteer for the project, both as a photographer and general-purpose volunteer.

I took many photographs (as you’ll see below) – I also shot some video, which I am hoping to cut together into a documentary-ish short about the project.

Love is…

Last Thursday was Maundy Thursday, and I listened to a very moving sermon on Love. And as I was about to turn the page to continue my notes, I came across a leaf, randomly stuck in my journal.

Love is....

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.
